The practice of operatic music being transcribed for winds was one known to Mozart and practiced during the lifetimes of Beethoven, Weber, Rossini, Wagner and Verdi. There is a dimension about this music that provides unique musical challenges, cultivating a style of expressive playing deeply rooted in the vocal tradition, and not found in any other genre. Grand Scenes features pieces such as Overture to William Tell, Ballet Music from Le Cid, and Grand Fantasie from Die Walkure. Directed by Colonel Timothy W. Foley, Grand Scenes was recorded by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. The music represented on this album not only exemplifies the talent and professionalism of the United States Marine Band, but it is also representative of the dedication and attention each composer put into their compositions.
